Public toilets and parking may cost money even when the walk itself is free. For a longer, active outing, Dùn na Cuaiche offers a woodland climb to a viewpoint above the town. The return from the castle area is around three miles, with steep, rough ground and extra distance if you begin in central Inveraray. Carry water and layers, allow daylight for the descent and check current estate notices. This is not a substitute for an accessible promenade. Castle rooms and gardens, the jail and Auchindrain normally charge admission, so they are not presented here as free visits. If the hill or weather does not suit, keep the shorter town outing and your own food plan. A free day should fit your abilities, not depend on reaching a summit.
