INVERARAY GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Prison stories and a historic courtroom / INVERARAY

Inveraray Jail

Give the courtroom and prison buildings time to tell their stories rather than treating the jail as a quick novelty stop. Audio interpretation and reconstructed settings help explain the people, punishments and daily routines behind the walls. It is a substantial central attraction that can anchor a wet afternoon or a history-focused day.

Before you go

The ordinary jail visit and the escape-room experience are separate products. A museum ticket should not be assumed to include a timed escape-room booking.

The practical details

Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
The current visitor page lists Thursday–Monday opening, with Tuesday and Wednesday closed, and last entry at 16:00. Ordinary self-guided visits do not require booking; check the live calendar before travelling. Escape-room sessions require a separate reservation.
Access and getting around
The historic buildings have narrow doors, worn stairs and no lift. Wheelchair users can visit ground-floor prison areas through the shop route; the full courtroom and upper-floor circuit is not step-free. Pushchairs are not permitted; the venue offers storage and baby-carrier loans. There are accessible toilets and some outdoor transfers between buildings.

Visiting with children
Read the description with your children’s interests and sensitivities in mind: prison life and punishment can be unsettling. Keep the visit flexible, use the interpretation selectively and ask staff about an appropriate route rather than promising a light-hearted play attraction.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 1.5–2 hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
