Once in Millport, the Museum of the Cumbraes gives the island some context without taking over the day. Its small displays fit well with a meal and a waterfront walk. The cathedral offers another short, quiet visit when open, with an uphill approach from the seafront. Cycling is the bigger commitment. Hire a bike that fits, leave time for breaks and choose a shorter ride if anyone is uncertain. Do not combine an ambitious circuit with a tight ferry deadline. A satisfying shorter visit stays in town: museum, lunch and a stretch of the seafront towards Crocodile Rock or Kames Bay. The Robertson Aquarium is currently closed, so it should not be the reason for travelling. Millport works best when you leave room for the island journey and choose the amount of exploring that suits the day.

Walk up from the seafront to the Cathedral of the Isles for a calmer part of the day. The compact church and its surrounding buildings offer a different view of Millport from the beaches and cycle shops. Visit the public cathedral respectfully around worship and events; the adjoining college and accommodation are not an invitation to explore private rooms.
Follow a manageable section of the waterfront from the town towards Kames Bay, looking across the water and pausing by the familiar painted Crocodile Rock. The attraction is the changing shoreline and an unhurried seaside break, not a checklist of separate rocks and beaches. Turn back whenever the weather or your group suggests; the longer Farland Point route is an optional further walk.
A roughly ten-mile circuit takes you beyond the town and around Cumbrae’s coast. Hire a suitable cycle in Millport or bring your own, then leave time for views and breaks rather than treating it as a race. It is a public-road ride shared with vehicles, including traffic serving the ferry, and exposed sections can feel very different when the wind picks up.
