Heritage / NOTTINGHAM
City of Caves
Descend into Nottingham’s sandstone to experience part of the city that is hidden beneath the streets. An audio-guided route turns the chambers into a compact history visit and offers a very different perspective from the castle galleries. It works as a focused booking within a Lace Market half-day, rather than a long underground expedition.

Use the current Sussex Street and Cliff Road entrance instructions, not the former shopping-centre entrance. Make a toilet stop before your timed entry.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Corner of Sussex Street and Cliff Road, below Garner’s Hill steps beside Nottingham Contemporary.
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Reserve a timed slot and include carers in the booking. The operator asks visitors to arrive 5–10 minutes early; late entry is not guaranteed. Bring headphones for the approximately 45-minute audio guide.
- Access and getting around
- Entry is by spiral staircase and the sandstone floor is uneven. The operator says the site is unsuitable for wheelchair users, mobility difficulties, prams and pushchairs. Discuss enclosed-space or assistance-dog needs before paying.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Consider whether your child will enjoy enclosed spaces and an audio-led experience. There are no on-site toilets or café; plan those separately before entering.
Practical information checked 14 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
Make it part of your day
Allow about 1 hour for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
