Plan your visit

While the galleries are closed, plan around 45–90 minutes for a chosen Arboretum circuit in suitable weather, shortening it whenever the group has had enough. These are editorial allowances, not a verified step-free route. Use toilets before entering because the council currently lists none in the park, and do not rely on the seasonal café. Bring food if it helps your budget, while checking current park notices and gate times. The shorter alternative is one manageable park section and a rest, rather than adding a cross-centre journey to a closed exhibition. Tram travel can reduce walking but adds a fare. This collection does not currently provide a dependable free indoor half-day; in persistent rain, postpone the park or reconsider the budget for an existing paid museum. Once Contemporary exhibitions resume, the gallery-and-park pairing can return after checking dates, access and the transfer. Café and shop opening is not gallery opening. Free general entry excludes refreshments, travel and individually ticketed events. The full Wollaton museum has paid admission on its main visit page despite older free-entry descriptions elsewhere.

Nottingham Contemporary

Nottingham Contemporary’s galleries are temporarily closed for exhibition installation, as checked on 16 September 2026. The café and shop remain open, but they do not provide an exhibition visit. The venue advertises an exhibition launch on Thursday 8 October at 6.30pm; check the subsequent public programme before planning a free art visit. Changing exhibitions will again offer a chance to compare reactions to different artists and media once gallery access resumes.

Nottingham Arboretum

Tree collections, planted borders and historic park features offer a green pause north of the shopping centre. Follow part of the council’s tree or heritage trail, or simply choose a short circuit and a bench. This is a useful free outdoor destination in its own right, with enough variety for a slow walk without committing to a large country park.

During the installation closure, the Contemporary exhibition visit is unavailable regardless of the weekday. On a suitable dry day choose the Arboretum alone; after reopening, check the gallery programme and its usual Monday closure.
