Skara Brae

Travel to the Bay of Skaill for a substantial archaeological visit beyond Stromness. The exhibition and replica house help explain how the settlement worked before you follow the outdoor route above the original stone buildings. The surviving homes are viewed from designated paths, rather than treated as rooms you can freely walk into. Book a suitable time and allow for the journey as well as the exposed coastal setting.

Where to find it: Sandwick, west Mainland Orkney

Tickets and booking: Reserve the correct timed ticket and check the current opening calendar and closures. The visit is mostly exposed outdoors beyond the centre; do not use it as an entirely indoor rain plan.
Access and getting around: The centre has ramped access and an adapted toilet. The settlement is about 500m away along a mostly bound path with a gate; the site has narrow sections, grass or stone surfaces and some steps. Discuss your route with staff.

Visiting with children: The replica house can make the ancient settlement easier to imagine. Bring suitable layers for the outdoor part and choose a pace that leaves children time to look.
