The surviving homes are viewed from designated paths, rather than treated as rooms you can freely walk into. Book a suitable time and allow for the journey as well as the exposed coastal setting.
Choose a modest out-and-back section of this rugged coast to appreciate the cliffs, inlets and sea stacks. The landscape feels very different from sheltered Stromness streets, and strong wind can change what is sensible even on a bright day. Yesnaby Castle is a sea stack, not a castle building to enter. The full coastal route back to Stromness is a much bigger undertaking than this suggested visit.
