The Pier Arts Centre is the strongest timed anchor for a free Stromness visit. Check its usual Tuesday-to-Saturday opening, choose a few works to spend time with and leave room for the changing exhibition. Free admission does not mean that every day or event has the same arrangements, so look up the current programme before travelling specifically for the gallery. A town walk is more flexible. Follow an appropriate stretch of the main street, noticing heritage details and harbour views, then pause for a picnic or something you choose to buy. Keep to public routes rather than assuming every attractive close or pier is open to wander along. Wet flagstones and shared traffic are reasons to slow down, not to rush through the town. Yesnaby adds a free-access landscape outing if you already have suitable transport and the conditions are right. It is not a short extension of the town stroll. Choose a modest out-and-back route, keep well back from cliff edges and turn around when footing or wind makes the walk uncomfortable. There is no need to reach the sea stack to make the trip worthwhile. Allow separately for ferry travel, local transport, parking arrangements and refreshments. Stromness Museum charges adult admission and Skara Brae is a ticketed attraction, so neither is counted as a free stop here. A shorter low-cost day can stay entirely in town with the gallery and a few public streets, avoiding another journey and keeping the pace relaxed.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Spend time with modern and contemporary art in a gallery closely connected to its harbour setting. The collection and changing exhibitions offer a quieter counterpoint to outdoor sightseeing, and free admission makes it easy to give a few works proper attention without feeling obliged to stay all day. Check the current programme if you are hoping to see a particular artist or exhibition.
Follow the winding main street at an unhurried pace, noticing old buildings, narrow lanes and glimpses of the harbour. Local heritage points help connect the town with ships, trade and journeys far beyond Orkney. Keep to public routes and respect the working waterfront and private closes; this is a compact town walk, not the long coastal route to Yesnaby.
Choose a modest out-and-back section of this rugged coast to appreciate the cliffs, inlets and sea stacks. The landscape feels very different from sheltered Stromness streets, and strong wind can change what is sensible even on a bright day. Yesnaby Castle is a sea stack, not a castle building to enter. The full coastal route back to Stromness is a much bigger undertaking than this suggested visit.
