The Great Hall

The Round Table displayed high on the wall gives Winchester’s Great Hall a strong visual centre. Come for the scale of the surviving medieval hall and the way later generations used Arthurian legend, rather than expecting evidence that King Arthur actually sat here. Queen Eleanor’s Garden provides a small outdoor pause before the short walk to Westgate.

Before you go

The normal ticket covers both the Great Hall and Westgate Museum. Compare it with the Explorer ticket only if you also intend to visit City Museum; buying a larger bundle is unnecessary for a one-stop afternoon.

Tickets and booking: Paid admission is shared with Westgate Museum; these venues are cashless. Check each venue’s live hours and any event restrictions. Last admission is normally 30 minutes before closing; leave enough time for both parts of the ticket.
Access and getting around: The approach includes uneven cobbles and an uphill walk from the lower High Street. Low ramps provide access to the hall and garden. The shop, gallery, accessible toilet and baby changing are reached by stairs or a lift; ring the bell or ask staff for assistance with the lift.

Visiting with children: The table is easy to spot and discuss without a long reading session. Dressing-up activities can help children engage with the hall. Follow with a snack before deciding whether everyone has the energy for Westgate’s steep stairs.
