For a change from Windsor’s castle and Thames frontage, make the Savill Garden near Englefield Green the purpose of a separate half-day. This is a cultivated garden within the larger estate, with its own admission and visitor centre. Reaching it is a different journey from stepping onto the Long Walk in central Windsor.
Use the official Wick Lane approach and select the Savill Garden car park rather than navigating vaguely to Windsor Great Park. Visitors cannot drive through restricted estate roads. From central Windsor, leave a generous travel margin; for a taxi outing, agree the return collection point and time before setting off. If travelling by public transport, check the current park bus timetable, the walk from the stop and the return service: the estate describes its bus as Monday to Saturday, so do not assume a Sunday connection. Allow 2–3 hours in the garden and 45–60 minutes for refreshments, plus both journeys. These are editorial planning allowances. The shorter alternative is a focused 60–90-minute garden visit with a drink at the centre. Check seasonal opening and current Spring Wood/path notices, and avoid adding a full Long Walk or lake circuit simply because the names share an estate.
