You can enjoy Windsor’s setting without paying to enter the castle. Start with Alexandra Gardens or a short Long Walk section, using the town’s views and green space as the day’s purpose. Across the river, Eton’s Natural History and Antiquities museums add an indoor option during limited Sunday-afternoon openings.
For a free-entry half-day, spend 30–45 minutes in Alexandra Gardens, leave 45–60 minutes for a picnic and walk through the centre to the town end of the Long Walk. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes for that transfer and up to an hour for a short return walk; these are editorial estimates and include neither a surveyed accessible route nor castle admission. For a shorter outing, stay near the river. Check park notices before planning beyond the town-end view, because the Deer Park can close. A Sunday museum visit needs its own opening check and may be a better alternative to a long walk when the weather changes. Keep transport, parking, meals and optional attractions separate from the free-entry promise.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
The tree-lined approach south of the castle gives Windsor one of its clearest landscape views. You can enjoy the town-end stretch and turn back without making the distant Copper Horse your destination. A longer walk enters a working deer park and needs more time, suitable conditions and an open route.
Alexandra Gardens gives a central Windsor day somewhere to pause near the Thames. The lawns, bandstand and seating work well after the castle’s busier visitor route, with a short riverside walk available if you want to stretch the stop. Seasonal attractions are optional additions rather than the reason the gardens are worthwhile.
Across the Thames in Eton, the Natural History Museum and Museum of Antiquities offer two different subjects for a carefully timed afternoon. Choose specimens or the ancient world as your starting point rather than trying to tour the whole college. Public museum opening does not provide unrestricted access to the school.
PLAN YOUR DAY
The Long Walk provides an outdoor view towards the castle from permitted public areas. That is different from entering the precincts or State Apartments. Choose a short stretch, check access notices and do not assume the whole Deer Park is open just because the town-end view is available.

You can turn around much earlier and still enjoy the perspective. Check closures and keep away from deer rather than extending the route to seek them out.
