Indoor Windsor needs a calendar check. The castle has substantial interiors but also exposed walking; Theatre Royal needs an actual performance; Eton’s selected museums open only in limited public windows. Choose the experience that is available on your date, then plan a direct arrival and a meal instead of crossing town repeatedly.
If the castle is open, allow 2–3 hours including arrival and security, then 45–60 minutes for lunch nearby. These are editorial allowances; the shorter version is the castle alone, with its indoor rooms as the focus and no long park walk afterwards. Dress for the outdoor parts of the route and check St George’s Chapel separately. On a confirmed Sunday opening, 1–2 hours in Eton’s Natural History or Antiquities museum followed by a café stop can make a lower-cost afternoon, although transfers are outdoors and access needs checking. A Theatre Royal matinee is an alternative only when scheduled and bookable. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are normally castle closing days, so do not travel expecting the castle to provide a rain fallback then.

The State Apartments and castle precincts make a substantial introduction to Windsor’s royal history. Choose this as your main visit if you want to go beyond the walls seen from town. St George’s Chapel is part of the usual sightseeing offer when open, but its worship calendar and separate restrictions matter.
Across the Thames in Eton, the Natural History Museum and Museum of Antiquities offer two different subjects for a carefully timed afternoon. Choose specimens or the ancient world as your starting point rather than trying to tour the whole college. Public museum opening does not provide unrestricted access to the school.
This theatre on Thames Street provides an evening or matinee shaped around a live production rather than sightseeing. Choose a play, musical or other performance for its subject and cast, then leave time to arrive and settle in. Its central position makes it a practical alternative to extending a long outdoor walk.
