The cathedral also welcomes ordinary visitors without an admission charge, with donations appreciated; services, restoration and separately ticketed events still affect what you can do. These are different experiences, so choose one or both according to your available time rather than treating free entry as a reason to rush. A packed lunch and a short canal-basin walk make a straightforward afternoon. The public towpath is free, but boat trips are separate paid activities and the full aqueduct return requires more time and energy. The Usk promenade is another free option, especially for a meadow or play pause, although town-side gradients and flood conditions must be considered. Transport, parking, food, donations you choose to make and purchases remain separate from attraction admission. The museum and gallery occupy the former Shire Hall alongside a modern library, giving you several ways to spend an indoor hour or two. Look for the courtroom and choose the collections that interest your party rather than assuming every temporary display will still be on during your visit.
Take time inside the cathedral for its stonework, windows and the quieter rhythm of a working church. The building began as a priory and now serves a much wider diocese, so history and present-day worship belong together here. A short, attentive visit can be more rewarding than trying to identify every feature, especially if you combine it with lunch and one other town stop.
Begin at the basin and follow the towpath only as far as suits your day. Boats and historic bridges give interest close to town, while a longer walk reaches the Brynich Aqueduct over the Usk. The shorter version pairs naturally with lunch or a theatre visit; the full return is a proper walk rather than a quick detour between museums.
Choose the promenade for a different waterside setting from the canal: the River Usk, open meadow and benches make it a useful place to pause. You can keep to a short surfaced section or add time in the meadow and play area. Let the conditions and your party decide the distance instead of following every path farther upriver.
