Take a shorter museum visit focused on the wildlife and habitats around Essex. The former church setting makes it a compact contrast to the castle, and a useful place to connect things seen outdoors with displays indoors. Choose a few creatures or habitats to explore rather than expecting a large science centre.
Use the park for a change of pace beside the castle, choosing between formal planting and a longer route towards the lower grounds. Look for the Roman wall as part of the landscape rather than racing between monuments. It is an easy way to add fresh air to a museum day without another admission ticket.
Pause among the ruined church arches and look at the reused Roman brick in the Norman structure. This is a small, open-air historic site where a little close looking can be more rewarding than a long circuit. It pairs naturally with a city-centre day without becoming another museum-length visit.
