The current Museum in Miniature display is free, but it is a small Side Hall experience with limited afternoon hours while the main building has problems. Check its latest schedule and avoid planning a morning around doors that will not yet be open. The town walk can fill the time more flexibly. Choose a short route through the centre, noticing building details and stopping whenever you want. Lady Hill is an optional extension for those comfortable with the climb; it is not needed to make the walk worthwhile. Street works and crossings may require changes from older route leaflets. Cooper Park offers another no-admission stop for a picnic, suitable play or a gentle wander. Follow the routes available around improvement works and keep pond activities out of the promise. Check the council’s current park notices for available facilities and temporary closures before setting out. Allow separately for transport, parking and anything you buy. The cathedral requires paid admission and guided mill experiences are also paid, so neither appears among this guide’s free activities. A shorter version uses the museum and a few town streets, or just the park and a picnic. The point is an enjoyable low-cost visit, not travelling further to complete every possible stop.
