Book the aquarium for a short indoor visit in town, or make a separate trip to Trerice when its house is open. Keep the zoo and beaches out of the role of guaranteed dry-weather substitutes: both involve significant time outside.
Blue Reef Aquarium is the simplest central indoor anchor. Reserve the appropriate ticket, allow around 60–90 minutes and plan a meal afterwards. Getting down to Towan Promenade and returning to the centre is still outdoors and sloping. The main aquarium route has ramps and a lift, but the nursery tanks are not accessible. Trerice gives the day a different subject, with historic rooms and a café stop, but it is several miles away. Confirm house opening, arrange both directions of transport and check access before travelling. A garden-open listing alone is not enough for a wet-day plan, and house access is limited. For a small free extra, ask whether Trenance’s heritage museum rooms are open on the day; do not travel expecting dependable winter hours without confirmation. It is reasonable to finish after one attraction and lunch. In heavy rain or strong wind, check transport disruption and drop coastal paths instead of trying to rescue a full outdoor itinerary.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Follow the marine displays and ocean tunnel at the aquarium on Towan Promenade. It is a compact indoor visit with the beach immediately outside, making it useful when a family day needs a reliable booked stop. Allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half rather than planning to spend the entire day inside.
Make a separate outing to the National Trust’s Elizabethan manor at Kestle Mill, outside Newquay. The house’s rooms, plasterwork and clocks provide an indoor focus, with a small garden and courtyard to explore when the weather allows. It suits a slower half-day for visitors who want a change from the coast.
PLAN YOUR DAY
Allow 60–90 minutes at the aquarium and 45–60 minutes for lunch nearby. If the rain eases, take a brief look at Towan from the promenade before returning uphill. Otherwise end after lunch. A second circuit may be possible under the same-day ticket terms, but check re-entry and last admission rather than assuming unlimited hours.

Allow roughly 20–30 minutes each way by car or taxi as a planning margin, then around two hours for the house and a café break. Skip the garden in sustained rain. For a shorter or car-free day, the town aquarium may be more practical.
