Build the day around the zoo, a compact aquarium visit or one beach. Leave room for food, changing and the uphill trip back into town; the best family plan does not require carrying everything between Fistral and Towan.
For a longer outing, choose Newquay Zoo and keep Trenance Gardens as the optional finish. For a shorter visit or persistent rain, book Blue Reef Aquarium and plan lunch nearby. The aquarium’s usual visit is around an hour, so it helps to set expectations before telling children you are spending the day there. Compare the full party’s admission, parking and food costs. The zoo currently sells individual adult and child tickets rather than a fixed family ticket, and online discounts can depend on when you buy. Bring a picnic if that suits the budget. Check assistance-dog and carer arrangements directly rather than assuming different venues have identical rules. Beach days need current RNLI dates, flags and supervision. Towan’s autumn patrol pattern differs from Fistral’s. Use roads and paths to return to town, never a strip of sand you hope will stay exposed. Trenance’s level paths may be easier with a buggy once you reach the valley, although the walk from the centre is hilly.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Give the zoo a substantial part of the day among animal habitats and gardens in Trenance. The site combines wildlife viewing, outdoor paths and play areas, with space for a food break. It works best as the main family outing rather than an extra stop after a long morning carrying beach equipment.
Follow the marine displays and ocean tunnel at the aquarium on Towan Promenade. It is a compact indoor visit with the beach immediately outside, making it useful when a family day needs a reliable booked stop. Allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half rather than planning to spend the entire day inside.
Step away from Newquay’s cliff-top streets into the Trenance valley for planted gardens, the stream and a loop beside the boating lake. The heritage cottages add a view of older Newquay, with free museum rooms when open. Choose this for a gentler outdoor pause rather than another exposed beach.
Towan puts a sandy beach immediately below the centre, beside the aquarium and the harbour side of Newquay Bay. The offshore rock and its bridge are distinctive landmarks to look at from the shore. It makes a convenient short beach stop before lunch or after the aquarium without walking all the way to Fistral.
Watch the Atlantic surf, spend time on the sand or build a separate beach day around Fistral. This is Newquay’s open, west-facing shore, beyond the town centre and different in character from Towan beside the aquarium. A shore-side visit is worthwhile without entering the water or booking a lesson.
PLAN YOUR DAY
Allow 2½–3½ hours at the zoo including a 45-minute food break. If children still have energy, leave 10–20 minutes to reach the gardens and add 30–45 minutes beside the lake. Then head back for transport with a margin for hills and tired legs. The shorter plan is zoo and lunch only; no second attraction ticket is needed.

Trenance has level paths once in the valley. Beach sand, steep harbour access and the Huer’s Hut climb require different planning.
