Plan your visit

Start by deciding whether your visit is mainly about Omagh itself or the attractions around it. The Ulster American Folk Park is on Mellon Road outside town and deserves several hours for its buildings and migration stories. Gortin Glen is another separate journey, north towards the Sperrins. Neither should be treated as a short stroll from the centre, particularly if you are depending on public transport or a taxi. Confirm the return journey before committing to an arrival time. For a history-led day, reserve the Folk Park and check which areas are available. America Street has an announced closure on 15 and 16 September 2026, and the usual Monday closure also matters. The site is partly outdoors despite being a museum, so waterproofs and walking comfort are part of the plan. Return to Omagh for a meal and, if the programme suits, an evening performance at Strule. Book the show with a realistic gap after the museum rather than relying on the latest possible departure. A town-focused visit can instead use a public-swim session and a specific arts event. The pool timetable is more useful than the complex’s building hours, and its currently closed café means food needs a separate arrangement. For an outdoor day, travel directly to Gortin Glen and select a marked walk before extending the outing. The shorter alternative is a single pool session, a performance or a modest forest walk, according to your available time. Grange Park’s playground and toilets are currently closed for redevelopment, so do not use older family listings to promise a further play stop.

Ulster American Folk Park

Follow the story of migration from Ulster to North America through historic buildings, reconstructed settings and interpretation. The museum is outside Omagh, with outdoor journeys between its interiors, so it rewards a substantial visit with suitable footwear rather than a quick town-centre stop.

Strule Arts Centre

Choose a theatre, music or other programmed event at the town-centre arts venue. The performance programme gives an evening in Omagh a clear purpose, while gallery activity has its own schedule. Match the visit to an actual event rather than expecting a show whenever the building is open.

Gortin Glen Forest Park

Travel north of Omagh for the forest park’s walks and play facilities in the Sperrins landscape. Pick a route from the current trail information, keeping walking, cycling and other activity areas distinct. A short woodland visit can be enough without committing to the longest route.

Swimming at Omagh Leisure Complex

Use a public swimming session for an indoor activity, selecting the main, learner or toddler pool timetable to suit your group. Visitors can use pay-and-go arrangements without buying a membership. Book and plan around the pool session, not the longer opening hours of the whole complex.

MAKE A DAY OF IT

One main stop.
A little wandering.
Your kind of Omagh.

Flexible plans with room for food and a rest. Walking allowances are editorial estimates, not live directions or verified step-free routes.

01 / A DAY AT YOUR PACE

Emigration history and an Omagh evening

Give the Folk Park the main part of the day, then return to town for an optional performance.

  1. Ulster American Folk Park

Check the current available route and spend several hours exploring, with suitable weather protection.

  2. Strule Arts Centre

Return to Omagh with time for food and attend only a preselected, booked event.

A shorter visit

Finish after the museum and a meal if the available show or travel timing does not fit.

02 / A DAY AT YOUR PACE

A family forest outing

An outdoor visit centred on a manageable marked trail and play time at Gortin Glen.

  1. Gortin Glen Forest Park

Check signs and conditions, pick a trail for the youngest walker and keep a comfortable return in reserve.

A shorter visit

Use the play area and a brief woodland section before returning, without extending the walk.

03 / A DAY AT YOUR PACE

A wet day in town

Build indoor time around available sessions rather than assuming every facility is open throughout the day.

  1. Swimming at Omagh Leisure Complex

Use a confirmed public session with the right supervision and changing time. Arrange food outside the closed café.

  2. Strule Arts Centre

Attend a suitable programmed event only if the schedule leaves enough room between the two activities.

A shorter visit

Choose either the swim or the performance if their times or family needs do not align.
