The John Buchan Story provides a free indoor starting point during its advertised season, with donations supporting the charity. Check the exact opening day and arrive with enough time to enjoy the displays: most current weekday and Saturday sessions finish at lunchtime. It has its own street access while the larger museum and gallery remain closed for refurbishment. For an outdoor addition, take a short Tweed-side stroll or spend time in Hay Lodge Park. Decide whether the group wants a relaxed pause or a longer signed route, since distance, steps and mud can change the character of the outing. Free access is not a reason to continue beyond the point at which the return becomes tiring. Glentress offers free ordinary forest walking, but getting there and parking can cost money. Bring the current walking map, follow closures and choose a route that fits the time available. Bike hire and other organised activities are separate paid extras, not included in a no-admission walk.
