Dunbar connects a working harbour with John Muir’s story and a choice of outdoor adventures; North Berwick offers marine discovery, local history and a compact seaside centre. Pick one town for the day, then decide whether you want an indoor anchor, beach time or a more demanding outing. The tide and weather can change that decision more than the length of your wish list.

START WITH WHAT YOU ENJOY
Choose Dunbar for a town day linking John Muir’s Birthplace with the harbour and Battery. The Town House Museum adds another subject when its limited seasonal hours fit. Belhaven and John Muir Country Park are a separate coastal choice, while Foxlake needs an activity-specific booking and eligibility check. Dunbar Castle is not an open visitor attraction to add casually to the harbour walk.
North Berwick suits a visit built around the Scottish Seabird Centre’s indoor Discovery Experience, with harbour and beach time left flexible. The Coastal Communities Museum offers a smaller local-history alternative when open. North Berwick Law is a steep hill outing, while Tantallon Castle and the National Museum of Flight require separate journeys. Choose one of those larger excursions instead of expecting them all to fit around lunch.
PLAN A DAY THAT WORKS
A short break can give Dunbar and North Berwick a day each without repeated packing and timed arrivals. For a single day, choose the town that matches your interests and keep one outdoor addition flexible. The Museum of Flight is inland at East Fortune and Foxlake is outside Dunbar; neither is a walk-through part of a harbour visit. Check the real connection and leave space for arrival, food and the return journey.
Start with the Scottish Seabird Centre’s Discovery Experience, then have lunch and take a suitable harbour or shore walk. If the Coastal Communities Museum is open and you want more local context, add it afterwards. The short version keeps the indoor visit and a brief waterfront pause. A boat trip is a separate booking dependent on the operator’s conditions, not something included with the indoor attraction or guaranteed after lunch.
Families can build a day around one museum and shore play without making swimming or a boat trip essential. Foxlake has different age, height, swimming and supervision rules for each activity, so choose the exact session before travelling. Couples can enjoy a slower town day or a planned climb of North Berwick Law when conditions suit. The hill is not an easy extension for every group simply because it is visible from town.
Dunbar’s John Muir’s Birthplace and Town House Museum, and North Berwick’s Coastal Communities Museum, offer free ordinary visits on their actual opening days. Winter can greatly reduce the choice, so check the calendar before relying on two museums in one afternoon. The Seabird Centre’s paid indoor experience is separate from free shop or café access. The Museum of Flight provides indoor displays but has outdoor transfers between buildings; Tantallon remains an exposed ruin.
Belhaven’s bridge is affected by the tide, and a harbour or beach photograph does not guarantee an all-tide walking route. Follow current shore and weather notices, and do not assume a beach is supervised for swimming. North Berwick town parking has charged areas, separate from attraction car parks. Check exact entrances and return transport, and use the linked guides for the practical difference between level town paths, steep Battery approaches and hill routes.
