John Muir’s Birthplace makes a useful starting point for understanding why this coast matters to the town’s story. Check the museum’s opening day, then walk down to the harbours for a change of pace. The Battery adds views and coastal history when conditions allow, but the castle is a ruin to look at rather than a castle you can tour. Dunbar Town House offers a second indoor visit on the High Street. In summer its afternoon hours can fit after lunch; in winter the public opening window shrinks to Saturday afternoons. Plan around that reality instead of assuming two museums will be open whenever you arrive. For a longer outdoor outing, head west towards Belhaven Bay and John Muir Country Park. The tide affects the famous bridge and beach access, so choose a route that still works for the return. Foxlake is another separate trip west of town, with an activity booking and time for changing built into the plan. Its seasonal programme is not a year-round promise of every water activity. A good first day is one museum, lunch and the harbour, with the bay saved for suitable weather or a second visit. For a shorter alternative, stay in the centre. East Links Family Park closed in August 2026 and is deliberately not included among current places to visit.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Begin with the boy who grew up in Dunbar before becoming an influential writer and environmental campaigner. The museum connects a local home with a much wider story about the natural world. A focused visit can give a later coastal walk more meaning without requiring you to be an expert on Muir or his American journeys.
The tower is familiar from the High Street, but a visit inside provides a closer introduction to the town. Use the museum and changing gallery displays to follow one or two local stories, with time to ask staff about the building. A tour of additional historic rooms is a separate possibility to confirm, not an automatic part of every drop-in visit.
Walk down from the High Street to see a working harbour, then continue towards the Battery when conditions allow. The relationship between fishing, defences and the sea is visible without needing a long tour. Leave space for harbour operations and enjoy the views from permitted routes rather than treating every wall or ruin as somewhere to explore.
Choose a section of the broad bay or the park paths west of Dunbar for an outdoor outing that can be as short or substantial as you want. The changing tide is part of the appeal, but it also changes the route. Leave time to turn back comfortably rather than making the far end of the beach an essential destination.
Choose an activity that suits your group, from an introductory wakeboarding session to a seasonal inflatable or over-water obstacle course. This is a booking-led outing west of Dunbar, with changing time and safety requirements, rather than a general park where every activity is included in one admission ticket. Leave room for changing, instructions and recovery afterwards.
