Dunbar harbours and Battery

Walk down from the High Street to see a working harbour, then continue towards the Battery when conditions allow. The relationship between fishing, defences and the sea is visible without needing a long tour. Leave space for harbour operations and enjoy the views from permitted routes rather than treating every wall or ruin as somewhere to explore.

Before you go

The castle ruins are a landmark to view, not an open castle tour. The Battery may close in extreme weather, and working quaysides need more care than a pedestrian-only promenade.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary public harbour and Battery access is free, with special events separate. Follow local signs, avoid restricted working areas and give boats and vehicles priority. Check weather before using exposed sections.
Access and getting around: Approaches from the High Street slope downhill. The Battery route crosses an uneven drawbridge and uses ramps, some steep; assistance may be needed. Check the access guide and current conditions rather than assuming a completely level circuit.

Visiting with children: Keep children close beside unguarded water, boats and working equipment. Watch harbour activity from a sensible position; seals and seabirds are possible sightings, not a guaranteed attraction.
