For a flexible family day, start at John Muir’s Birthplace and follow one or two stories about nature rather than trying to read every display. A harbour visit afterwards gives everyone a change of scene, but keep children close around working boats and unguarded water. The Battery is exposed and should be optional if the weather is uncomfortable. Belhaven Bay offers a different kind of day, with space for a manageable coastal outing. Check the tide before deciding the access point and route. The Bridge to Nowhere is not available at all states of tide, and a photograph is never a reason to wade through a channel or risk being cut off. Bring layers and a food plan for the return. Foxlake can suit older children who meet the chosen activity’s age, height and swimming requirements. Read those rules before promising a session, then allow the required early arrival, changing time and a calm break afterwards. Adult supervision rules vary, and the seasonal programme reduces in winter. Dunbar Town House can add a short indoor stop when its limited hours fit. East Links Family Park has closed, so do not build a day around older recommendations for it. For a shorter alternative, choose just one museum and lunch, or one beach outing; there is no need to add a second fixed booking.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Begin with the boy who grew up in Dunbar before becoming an influential writer and environmental campaigner. The museum connects a local home with a much wider story about the natural world. A focused visit can give a later coastal walk more meaning without requiring you to be an expert on Muir or his American journeys.
Walk down from the High Street to see a working harbour, then continue towards the Battery when conditions allow. The relationship between fishing, defences and the sea is visible without needing a long tour. Leave space for harbour operations and enjoy the views from permitted routes rather than treating every wall or ruin as somewhere to explore.
Choose a section of the broad bay or the park paths west of Dunbar for an outdoor outing that can be as short or substantial as you want. The changing tide is part of the appeal, but it also changes the route. Leave time to turn back comfortably rather than making the far end of the beach an essential destination.
Choose an activity that suits your group, from an introductory wakeboarding session to a seasonal inflatable or over-water obstacle course. This is a booking-led outing west of Dunbar, with changing time and safety requirements, rather than a general park where every activity is included in one admission ticket. Leave room for changing, instructions and recovery afterwards.
The tower is familiar from the High Street, but a visit inside provides a closer introduction to the town. Use the museum and changing gallery displays to follow one or two local stories, with time to ask staff about the building. A tour of additional historic rooms is a separate possibility to confirm, not an automatic part of every drop-in visit.
