Dunbar’s two small museums can make a rewarding wet-weather visit when their hours overlap. Plan a modest indoor outing, rather than promising a full day of sheltered attractions.

John Muir’s Birthplace is the more flexible indoor starting point, with several regular opening days and enough material for a focused visit. Check the later Sunday start and Monday–Tuesday closure before travelling. A warm meal or café break can give the day a comfortable shape without needing to fill every remaining hour with another attraction. Dunbar Town House offers local history and changing exhibitions nearby on the High Street. Its seasonal hours are crucial: April to September has selected afternoon opening, while October to March is normally Saturday afternoons only. If you hope to see additional historic rooms or the jail, ask about availability and access rather than assuming a building tour is included. The walk between the museums is outdoors, so bring a waterproof and keep any harbour detour optional. The Battery can close in extreme weather and the coast is exposed. Belhaven Bay is not an indoor fallback, and Foxlake remains an outdoor water-activity venue even when sessions operate in ordinary rain. For a shorter alternative, choose whichever museum is open and pair it with lunch. If neither is operating on your date, this guide is not promising a substitute indoor attraction that does not exist. Change the day or make separate plans elsewhere, checking opening and travel before setting out.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Begin with the boy who grew up in Dunbar before becoming an influential writer and environmental campaigner. The museum connects a local home with a much wider story about the natural world. A focused visit can give a later coastal walk more meaning without requiring you to be an expert on Muir or his American journeys.
The tower is familiar from the High Street, but a visit inside provides a closer introduction to the town. Use the museum and changing gallery displays to follow one or two local stories, with time to ask staff about the building. A tour of additional historic rooms is a separate possibility to confirm, not an automatic part of every drop-in visit.
