Free things to do in Dunbar

Begin with John Muir’s Birthplace if it is open, then take your time along the High Street before going down to the harbour. The museum gives a coastal outing a little more context, while the working quays and Battery offer a different view of the town. Stay on public routes and respect harbour operations; the castle ruins are not an invitation to climb. Dunbar Town House is another free museum, but its timetable is more restrictive than the central location might suggest. Summer visits are on selected afternoons, and winter access is normally limited to a short Saturday window. Check the current exhibition and any separately charged event before making a special trip. For a more outdoor day, choose Belhaven Bay and a manageable section of John Muir Country Park. Ordinary access is free, but coastal car parks charge and tides affect the routes. The bridge is not a reliable crossing at high water, so choose a safe access point and leave time for an uncomplicated return. Free admission does not cover meals, transport or optional purchases. Foxlake’s booked activities are paid and are not part of this selection. For a shorter alternative, keep one museum and the harbour, or visit the bay on its own. You do not need to walk the whole coast to have a worthwhile day.
