Begin in Forres if you want a flexible town day. Sueno’s Stone is a compact but rewarding history stop, with detailed carving to look at through the protective glass enclosure. It remains an outdoor visit, so do not mistake the case for a visitor building. Grant Park gives you more time outside among gardens, seating and play equipment, with the option of heading into Cluny Hill’s woodland only if the group wants a climb. Nelson’s Tower changes the woodland walk when its volunteers are opening the interior. Check the season and look for the Red Ensign; the viewing platform involves a spiral staircase and is not available on a step-free route. If the tower is closed, enjoy the walk without treating that as a failed visit. Adults interested in whisky can instead make a Benromach tour or tasting the main booking. Confirm the experience and access requirements, and arrange a driver’s pack or transport if tasting. Under-18s are not admitted, so it cannot simply be added to a family itinerary. Brodie Castle and Estate is a separate outing west of town. Check whether you want the paid castle interior, the currently free Playful Garden or estate walking, and remember that non-member parking is a separate charge. Castle and garden seasons differ from year-round grounds access, with winter restrictions particularly important. For a shorter Forres visit, keep the stone and a chosen part of the park, with food in town. For a fuller day, choose either the distillery or Brodie as the anchor rather than trying to fit every interest into one sequence. The most useful plan leaves enough time to enjoy the places you have chosen, including the return from a hill or the journey back from Brodie.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Look closely at the battle scenes and intricate carving on this enormous early medieval cross-slab. Its protective glass enclosure preserves the stone while allowing a view from outside, so this is a short outdoor history stop rather than an indoor museum. Give the details a little time instead of only taking a photograph of its height.
Take time among Grant Park’s gardens and seasonal planting, or give children a playground break close to the centre of Forres. The park makes a flexible pause between more structured visits, with seating and open space rather than another ticket or tour. Paths also lead towards Cluny Hill, but climbing the hill is a separate choice.
Walk through Cluny Hill’s woodland towards Nelson’s Tower for a different view of Forres and the Moray Firth. The volunteer-run tower opens seasonally, adding a spiral-stair climb and a high viewing platform when available. The outdoor walk remains a worthwhile choice without assuming the tower interior will be open.
Choose a tour or tasting to explore Benromach’s approach to making whisky in a working distillery. This is a specialist adult experience: the operator does not admit under-18s to the site. Select the experience that interests you and arrange the rest of the day around its actual length and start time.
Plan a visit to Brodie for the castle’s rooms and collections, then choose how much of the estate to explore. The house, Playful Garden and wider grounds have different admission and seasonal arrangements, so you can tailor the outing rather than assuming one ticket covers an identical experience all year. Brodie is outside Forres and needs a separate journey.
