Choose something you both want to linger over: paintings at Trafalgar Square, design at South Kensington or the engineering and river views of Tower Bridge. A day for two need not be expensive or heavily scheduled. These are daytime outings with room for conversation, a meal and a change of pace.
For an easy art-led half-day, each choose a few National Gallery pictures and spend about 90 minutes exploring them together. Leave 45–60 minutes for lunch, then walk towards St James’s Park for a short lakeside circuit if the weather suits, allowing roughly 20–30 minutes to reach the park. All timings are editorial estimates; the shorter version ends with lunch. General gallery entry keeps the admission budget for two low, while exhibitions and food are separate choices. If you prefer an engineering story and Thames views, book Tower Bridge as your main visit and keep the meal afterwards flexible. Check access and entry arrangements for both people before committing; neither crowds nor an evening opening are assumed away.

Give paintings your full attention in the galleries above Trafalgar Square. Choose a handful of pictures or a period you enjoy, then take a break before your attention fades. This is a rewarding first London art visit without a general admission charge.
Walk beside the lake, look towards the surrounding royal landmarks and pause to watch the waterbirds. A short park visit provides breathing space after Trafalgar Square, without adding another museum or admission booking.
Explore design, craftsmanship and decorative art at the V&A’s South Kensington museum. Follow a material, an object type or a museum trail, and leave time to notice how things were made. This visit can be a short encounter with a few galleries or the focus of an entire afternoon.
Spend time among avenues, lawns and monuments west of Hyde Park. The Albert Memorial end makes a manageable outdoor finish after a South Kensington museum; the Italian Gardens and Peter Pan statue belong to a longer wander, not an obligatory circuit.
Go inside the bridge to see the high-level walkways and the engineering story in the Engine Rooms. The paid visit adds a different perspective to the familiar riverside view; simply photographing the bridge from public space is a separate, shorter outing.
Make the fortress your main history commitment, exploring the stories of royal power, imprisonment and the Crown Jewels. The scale and historic buildings call for a selective route: decide which parts matter most before you start climbing every staircase.

Let the National Gallery be the main event, followed by a meal and an optional park walk. Agree a few pictures or a theme beforehand so you can explore together without trying to cover every room. Finish after lunch if the weather turns or you have an onward train.
