Allow ninety minutes to two hours, then plan a food break rather than expecting to spend the entire day indoors there. Term-time school groups can make it lively; the operator suggests a quieter period after 2.30pm, but closing at 4pm limits how much you can fit into that later visit. If you prefer to stay in the city centre, use the Museum + Gallery and the cathedral as two different interiors with lunch between. The gallery remains open during rooflight work scheduled through December 2026, though scaffolding affects the exterior and routes should be checked if access is essential. Its cells are not served by a lift; other areas have lift access. At the cathedral, follow the Welcome Centre entrance in Sumpter Yard and check services or closures before setting off. Neither combination is an entirely covered route. Bring a waterproof layer, allow time for the exposed transfers and avoid an unnecessary trip across the park just to fill a gap. The Hypocaust is interesting but brief, with an inclined, sometimes muddy approach and no toilet, so it is not included as a main rainy-day choice here. The Clock Tower also has a weather-dependent exposed viewpoint and narrow stairs. For a shorter wet outing, choose one confirmed open interior and a meal; for a full day, two substantial visits are enough without forcing an outdoor circuit.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Use the mosaics, recreated rooms and objects to picture the Roman town that once occupied the park outside. Concentrate on domestic life or a handful of favourite finds instead of trying to read every display. This is the substantial indoor Roman visit; the separate Hypocaust preserves a floor in its original setting.
Explore the former Town Hall through its historic spaces and changing displays. The courtroom and city timeline give the building a local identity beyond the exhibition of the moment. Choose the displays that appeal to you and check which events need separate tickets before making them the focus of the day.
Look beyond the scale of the nave to find medieval wall paintings and the shrine of St Alban. A slow circuit gives these details more attention than a hurried photograph of the outside. The cathedral remains a working church, so choose your visiting time around worship and any announced restrictions.
