The cathedral remains a working church, so choose your visiting time around worship and any announced restrictions.
Explore the former Town Hall through its historic spaces and changing displays. The courtroom and city timeline give the building a local identity beyond the exhibition of the moment. Choose the displays that appeal to you and check which events need separate tickets before making them the focus of the day.
Use the mosaics, recreated rooms and objects to picture the Roman town that once occupied the park outside. Concentrate on domestic life or a handful of favourite finds instead of trying to read every display. This is the substantial indoor Roman visit; the separate Hypocaust preserves a floor in its original setting.
Make a relaxed park walk between the Roman remains and the green space below the cathedral. The surviving city wall and London Gate outline help connect the landscape to the museum’s objects. Choose a modest route with a rest stop rather than treating the entire park as a single attraction to complete.
See a surviving mosaic and the heating system beneath it in a purpose-built shelter within Verulamium Park. It is a compact archaeological stop rather than a second full museum. Looking for the route warm air took beneath the floor gives children and adults a clear question to explore.
Climb the medieval civic tower for a different view of the city and its relationship with the cathedral. The narrow staircase is a significant part of this visit, so choose it for the climb as well as the view. From ground level the tower still makes a useful landmark on a central stroll.
