A wet Cardiff day works best with one proper indoor focus. National Museum Cardiff suits art and natural history, while Techniquest offers experiments at the Bay. The Senedd provides a shorter visit about public life and architecture. Choose the subject and district first so the day does not become a series of damp transfers.
For a central wet half-day, allow two hours at National Museum Cardiff and an hour for lunch, leaving enough time to reach your return transport. Those are editorial planning allowances. The shorter alternative is one selected gallery and a warm drink; check museum and café hours separately. If children want a more active visit, reserve Techniquest instead and spend two to three hours there before lunch at the Bay. Avoid booking both museums just to fill the forecast. Cardiff Castle can work for visitors keen on its interiors, but the grounds, keep approach and transfers remain outdoors, and the apartments require stairs. St Fagans and the waterfront are not dependable all-weather substitutes. Check opening days before travelling: the national museum’s regular Monday closure and Techniquest’s changing calendar can alter the best choice.

Art and natural history share the monumental museum beside the civic centre. You can spend a visit looking closely at paintings, or follow the geological and natural history displays to consider how Wales took shape. Pick one collection first: the museum rewards attention more than an attempt to cover every gallery.
Hands-on science experiments make Techniquest an active indoor visit at Cardiff Bay. Try the exhibits together, work out what changes when you adjust something, and leave space to repeat the favourites. Optional planetarium, theatre or lab sessions can give the visit a focus, but need their own availability and suitability checks.
The Welsh Parliament’s public building gives Cardiff Bay a purpose beyond the waterfront view. Explore the public spaces, learn about Welsh democracy on a tour or visit an exhibition. Watching parliamentary business is a different, scheduled experience: choose it deliberately rather than expecting a debate whenever the building opens.
A Norman keep rises above the lawns, while the castle house offers a very different encounter with Victorian imagination. Choose the rooms, wartime shelters and walls that interest you instead of treating the keep climb as the whole visit. The contrast between defensive stonework and lavish decoration makes this a strong introduction to Cardiff.
