Lurgan works well as a starting point for parks and water-side outings, but there are three different places to distinguish before setting off. Lurgan Park is beside the town and suits an arrival without an elaborate timetable. Oxford Island is a separate peninsula on Lough Neagh, reached by road; the name does not imply a ferry journey. South Lake Watersports is at Craigavon Lakes, with a booked activity and its own changing facilities. Decide which of these is the purpose of the trip rather than treating them as adjoining sections of a single park. For a first visit, use Lurgan Park’s main avenue, lake and play area, adding lunch in the town. Brownlow House makes a striking backdrop, but its interior is not guaranteed by the park’s free admission. The current operator advertises arranged group tours for six or more, so a history group should secure a quote and date before travelling. Casual visitors can enjoy the park without building the day around an unconfirmed house visit. If wildlife and a broader waterside setting appeal more, give Oxford Island the available afternoon. Check Discovery Centre and café hours separately from the reserve gates, and choose a path that suits current conditions. Paddling requires a different plan: book the right hire or coached format at South Lake, arrive in time to change and allow for the operator’s weather decisions. A shorter outing can simply stay in Lurgan Park. For a longer day, the town park and Oxford Island can be paired with a deliberate transfer and lunch break; adding a third lake destination rarely improves a visit unless you have a specific booking there.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Step away from Lurgan’s town centre into the former Brownlow estate for a lake walk, play or an unhurried pause beneath mature trees. The park supports several different lengths of outing, from the main avenue and fountain to a longer circuit. Brownlow House overlooks the grounds, but visiting its interior is a separate arrangement.
Enquire about a guided group visit to Brownlow House, also promoted as Brownlow Castle, for its architecture and wartime associations. This is an arranged interior experience rather than an open-access extension of a park walk. The operator currently invites group enquiries for six or more people.
Make a separate outing to the peninsula at the southern edge of Lough Neagh for woodland paths, shore views and birdwatching. Despite its name, Oxford Island is reached by land. The Discovery Centre and play area offer useful starting points, while the reserve’s paths let you choose a quieter nature-focused visit.
Head to Craigavon for a paid paddling session on the lakes, choosing coached instruction or equipment hire according to experience. It is a different outing from the Lough Neagh nature reserve and needs its own arrival point and booking. Leave time for changing as well as the session itself.
