For younger children, Lurgan Park is the easiest place in this selection to keep the day flexible. Begin with the play area or a short part of the lake walk, leaving the length of the route open. A tree or family activity trail can give older children something to notice, but it need not turn a simple park visit into a task. Check the toilet arrangements and bring what you need for a break; the town is the dependable place to plan refreshments unless a particular park café has been confirmed. Oxford Island offers a different family outing with a larger natural setting. Use the Discovery Centre as a starting point when it is open, then choose a manageable path and time at the play area. The lough edge needs supervision, and water-quality signs take priority over any expectation of getting close to the water. The small indoor exhibition is useful as part of the reserve visit, but it should not be presented as a full indoor day out. Centre and café hours can differ from the park gates. Paddling at South Lake can suit older children when everyone meets the session requirements. Standard hire and tasters currently start at eight; hire has a two-children-to-one-adult supervision rule. Choose instruction if the group needs it, and ask about participation or swimming requirements before paying. For a practical family day, combine Lurgan Park with a town lunch, or give Oxford Island its own longer visit. A booked paddling session may be enough activity on its own once changing and travel are included. The shorter version for tired children is a brief play visit, without a second transfer to another lake.
FIND YOUR KIND OF DAY
Step away from Lurgan’s town centre into the former Brownlow estate for a lake walk, play or an unhurried pause beneath mature trees. The park supports several different lengths of outing, from the main avenue and fountain to a longer circuit. Brownlow House overlooks the grounds, but visiting its interior is a separate arrangement.
Make a separate outing to the peninsula at the southern edge of Lough Neagh for woodland paths, shore views and birdwatching. Despite its name, Oxford Island is reached by land. The Discovery Centre and play area offer useful starting points, while the reserve’s paths let you choose a quieter nature-focused visit.
Head to Craigavon for a paid paddling session on the lakes, choosing coached instruction or equipment hire according to experience. It is a different outing from the Lough Neagh nature reserve and needs its own arrival point and booking. Leave time for changing as well as the session itself.
